In an era where sustainability and eco-conscious living are becoming increasingly important, businesses that cater to these values are not only meeting a demand but also shaping a better future for our planet. One business that has not only emerged but thrived in this space is the Eau Claire Refillery. As it approaches its one-year anniversary in October, we stopped by to get the story behind this green business and the impact it's making on both the local community and the environment.

A Zero Waste Champion

The story of Eau Claire Refillery is a personal one for its owner, Greta Gladitsch. Her motivation to establish the business was sparked by her own quest to embrace a zero-waste lifestyle. Recognizing the environmental toll of single-use plastics and the limited effectiveness of plastic recycling, Greta set out to find alternatives. She discovered that many of the products she needed to achieve her zero-waste goals were not easily accessible, often requiring shipping from distant locations.

Greta's determination to source local, sustainable, and zero-waste products led her on a path of discovery. As she connected with local and regional producers who shared her values, the idea of Eau Claire Refillery began to take shape. The store's mission was clear: to offer a range of eco-friendly, bulk, and package-free products that would help customers reduce waste in their daily lives.

“Once I started finding local producers, I thought, I could make these products available to others through my own storefront,” says Greta.

A Local Oasis of Sustainability

Eau Claire Refillery offers a diverse selection of products that span across various aspects of household living. From household cleaners to personal care items for kids and even pet care products, the store is a treasure trove for those seeking sustainable alternatives. What sets Eau Claire Refillery apart is its commitment to supporting local producers. Greta's priority is to first source products locally, then within the state of Wisconsin, and finally nationwide. By doing so, the store not only provides customers with eco-friendly choices but also boosts the local economy.

A Year of Success and Community Support

The reception to Eau Claire Refillery has been very positive. Customers are not only embracing the concept of package-free shopping but also appreciate having a physical store where they can access a wide range of sustainable products. Some of the top-selling items include shampoo and conditioner bars, laundry sheets, and dishwashing supplies. Greta remains attentive to customer feedback, constantly seeking new products and adapting her offerings to meet the evolving needs of the community.

Sustainability Made Simple

“It’s been a lot of work, and I’ve learned a lot over the last year, but it has been really fun to be able to connect customers to more sustainable products and help provide more eco-friendly shopping to the community,” says Greta.

For those new to the refillery experience, Eau Claire Refillery makes sustainability accessible and convenient. Customers have the option to bring their own containers or use containers provided by the store, which can be purchased or borrowed for free. Pricing is calculated by the ounce, allowing customers to take exactly the amount they need. Most products are not only package-free but also natural, septic safe, and compatible with high-efficiency appliances.

A Vision for the Future

Greta has exciting plans for the future. She aims to introduce distilled water as a product, addressing the need for a more sustainable way to obtain this essential resource. Beyond that, Greta envisions a second location in the future and hopes to expand the store's presence through pop-up events in neighboring communities. Her dedication to fostering eco-friendly shopping options remains unwavering.
