Wednesday, September 16
- 10:00 AM – Board Business + Breakfast | The Lismore Hotel | The board officially kicks off the week with a morning working session and a locally catered breakfast at the host hotel.
- 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM – Official Conference Registration Open | Check in at the registration desk to pick up your badges, programs, and welcome materials. Our Team will be on hand to help you get situated for the week ahead.
- 2:00 PM – Optional Art Track and Trolley Tour | Tour the Pablo Center at the Confluence, a stunning, state-of-the-art performing arts theatre that serves as the crown jewel of Eau Claire's downtown. Enjoy the vibrant downtown murals and take a guided tour of the Eau Claire Sculpture Tour, the largest rotating sculpture tour in the nation.
- 6:00 PM – Open Night Reception | The Brewing Projekt | Kick off the conference with a local BBQ dinner and award-winning craft beer at The Brewing Projekt. This is widely considered one of the best views in Eau Claire, featuring an outdoor & rooftop patio along the banks of the Chippewa River.
- Late-Night: Optional Craft Beer Celebration | Firehouse | Needing a nightcap? Head over to Firehouse in downtown Eau Claire–a local staple famous for its variety of local and regional craft beer selections, conveniently located just steps away from The Lismore Hotel.
Thursday, September 17
- 6:30 AM – Optional Sunrise Photo Opp | Dells Mill Museum | Join us for a guided tour of Dells Mill, one of the most photographed historic locations in Wisconsin. The 19th-century mill, surrounding water, and fall colors make the perfect backdrop for a storybook-worthy photo.
- 8:00 AM – Breakfast and Concurrent VP Hours | The Lismore Hotel | A full buffet breakfast served at our host hotel. This session includes our Vice President hours, allowing members to connect with leadership in a casual setting.
- 9:00 AM – Morning Tracks (Choice of One):
- History & Museum Tour: Dive into the region's heritage with visits to the Chippewa Valley Museum and the historic Banbury Place, a massive former tire factory repurposed into a thriving artist and maker community. Learn more about Eau Claire's rich logging and manufacturing industries.
- Apple Orchard Agritourism Track: Experience the best of Wisconsin autumn with guided tours of local orchards. The Glass Orchard features an on-site glass blowing studio with live demonstrations, and Leffel Roots is home to one of the only wheelchair-accessible apple picking decks in the United States.
- 12:30 PM – Chippewa Falls | Enjoy the brand new Market on the River, a modern indoor market featuring an array of local food and artisan vendors. We'll also visit the sprawling Irvine Park to see the scenic overlooks and local zoo before heading to the famous Leinie Lodge for a taste of brewing history.
- 6:00 PM – Dinner | The Lismore Hotel | Reconvene with the full group for our second evening reception and a formal group dinner in the Lismore ballroom.
- 8:00 PM – Live Jazz Music | 2 Roots Art & Wine | If you aren't ready to call it a night yet, spend the evening at this unique self-pour wine taproom. They boast one of the largest wine-by-the-glass selections in the country, all set within a cozy, gallery-inspired atmosphere featuring live jazz.
Friday, September 18
- 6:30 AM – Optional Kayak Tour | Experience Eau Claire from its riverways. Take a guided, hour-long paddle down the scenic Chippewa River and enjoy the quiet, beautiful sights of the valley before the business day begins.
- 8:15 AM - 10:15 AM – Professional Development and Breakfast | The Lismore Hotel | A morning of industry-leading workshops and professional development sessions served alongside a breakfast buffet.
- 10:15 AM – Media Marketplace | Dive | MTJA's signature networking event! Meet with destination representatives and industry partners at Dive, a sleek venue located on the rooftop of The Lismore Hotel.
- 12:45 PM – Lunch | The Yard Container Park | Lunch is served at Altoona's brand new container park–the first of its kind in Wisconsin. Explore this innovative space made of repurposed shipping containers that now house local boutique vendors and modern eateries.
- 2:00 PM – Menomonie Tour | Explore the beautiful city of Menomonie, just a 30-minute drive from Eau Claire. This track includes a guided tour of Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery to see how one of Wisconsin's most popular exports is made, as well as a visit to the breathtaking Mabel Tainer Theatre.
- 6:00 PM – Fish Fry Dinner | The Lakely | Take part in a legendary Wisconsin tradition, the Friday Night Fish Fry, while enjoying jazz music from local musicians. During dinner, we will have a demonstration of Kubb–a Swedish lawn game known as "Viking chess"... Eau Claire is the official Kubb Capital of North America, and you'll learn the basics from the pros.
Saturday, September 19
- 8:00 AM - 9:15 AM – Breakfast and MTJA Business Meetings | The Lismore Hotel | MTJA annual business meeting and organization updates.
- Time TBD – Food & Cuisine Track | Start at the amazing downtown Farmers Market pavilion in Phoenix Park, situated right along the river. Then, take a guided tour of Silver Spring Foods, the largest grower and producer of horseradish in the world. Finish the tour in the rolling hills of Mondovi, WI, with a fresh, farm-to-table burger lunch at Together Farms.
- Time TBD – Pow Wow | The Sonnentag Center | Experience the tradition and rhythm of a local Pow Wow right here in the Chippewa Valley, a place rich in Native American roots.
- 5:00 PM – Travel Wisconsin Cocktail Hour | Pablo Center at the Confluence (Clearwater Room) | Join our state partners for a final social hour before the awards begin. Use this time to network with destination representatives from across Wisconsin as well as your fellow media members.
- 6:00 PM – Awards Ceremony | Pablo Center at the Confluence (Clearwater Lobby) | The conference concludes with our annual awards banquet, where we'll celebrate the best in travel journalism!

- Departure & Post-Conference FAM Tours | For those joining our Post-Conference FAM tours, your journey through regional Wisconsin begins this morning!
Transportation
Getting to Eau Claire is easy whether you're flying into Minneapolis or the local airport. Shuttle options are available from both airports to the host hotel.

Flying into Minneapolis? Shuttle service is available between MSP and Eau Claire.

Door County
Early fall in Door County is the perfect blend of lingering summer warmth and the first hints of autumn color. Spend the day picking apples in a local orchard and climbing historic lighthouses for sweeping shoreline views. In between, sample standout flavors from Door County’s first-ever James Beard Award finalists and sip a new appellation wine from the Wisconsin Ledge AVA, Ledge Blanc, marking exciting milestones for the local food and beverage scene. Lake Geneva
Lake Geneva has been a beloved Midwestern escape for more than a century, and this post-conference trip invites journalists to step directly into a legacy that generations of travelers have enjoyed. From gilded-era estates to storied lakeside retreats, the destination’s vibrant past still shapes its character today. Attendees will explore the people, places, and treasured moments that transformed Lake Geneva into a nationally known vacation haven known as the “Newport of the West” and “Hamptons of Chicago”. It’s an opportunity to uncover rich history, compelling storylines, and fresh angles that continue to resonate with travelers today.
Day 1:
- Pick up in Eau Claire. Arrive in Lake Geneva
- Lunch at Oakfire Pizza overlooking Geneva Lake
- Check into lodging accommodations at Maxwell Mansion, the first 1850s-era luxury mansion in Lake Geneva
- Guided walk on the Geneva Lake Shore Path for an up-close view of historic mansions and estates
- End at Oak & Oar at The Geneva Inn for dinner overlooking the lake
Day 2:
- Coffee and light breakfast at The Porch in Downtown Lake Geneva
- Walk to the famed Riviera Plaza & Ballroom on the Geneva Lake shore
- Lake Geneva Cruise Line narrated boat tour on the area’s history, including Gilded Age era homes along the lakeshore (box lunch included)
- Arrive by boat to Black Point Estate & Gardens for a tour of this 1887 beer baron’s retreat
- Boat cruise back to Riviera
- Honey Tasting and cocktails at Maxwell Mansion
- Dinner at 1878 on the Lake, Lake Lawn Resort’s premier dining experience overlooking Delavan Lake, and home to a unique 19th-century circus legacy
Day 3:
- Breakfast at 240 West at The Abbey Resort on Geneva Lake’s western shore
- Tour of Pearce’s Farm Stand, a third-generation farm operation and popular visitor destination
- Cooking class and lunch at Lake Geneva School of Cooking, led by the celebrated chef and author, John Bogan
- An in-depth and out-of-this-world experience at Yerkes Observatory, home to the world’s largest refracting telescope and known as the birthplace of modern astrophysics
- Tour and tasting at Duesterbeck’s Brewing Co., a reimagined endeavor on the family’s 150-year-old farm
- Dinner at Mars Resort, a classic Wisconsin supper club nestled on the shore of Lake Como since 1923
Day 4:
- Transportation to departing airports
Physical requirements: The Blackpoint Estate tour involves approximately 100 steps up from the boat dock to the home. However, alternate transportation can be arranged to arrive by car instead of boat cruise. Geneva Lake Shore path walk can be altered to distance preferable to group.
