Hospice volunteers help by spending time with people who have terminal conditions in our local community offering emotional support and companionship. Hospice is the human side of healthcare focusing on quality of life. We care for not only the patient but also the entire family through this time of goodbyes and hard transitions. Volunteers allow us to offer more support to them. Many of them are either lonely or struggling and a smiling face and someone to talk to means the world to them.
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” – Leo Buscaglia
This is not so much an event, we work with your schedule and set you up to assist people local to you. These are the sort of tasks you might do:
- Companionship by watching movies or playing cards or dominos with them.
- Reading together, taking walks, and assisting with writing letters or using the computer.
- Helping them make a simple meal or doing some needed tidying.
- Sitting with patients and holding their hand so their family knows someone is with them and can rest.
- Calling them on the phone to check in and make sure they have everything they need.
We also have two other types of volunteers. You can be a clerical volunteer that assists in the office setting up things that will go to patients. The last option is being a volunteer that makes phone calls to check on our patients to make sure they have their needs met before a long weekend or they call families to be a support to grieving family members.
