The Powder Keg is in its fourth year, and races and registration will again be based out of the Eau Claire Expo Center. Snowshoers can choose to compete in either the five-mile race or two-mile race/run/walk. Mountain bikers will compete in a two-hour lapped race open to two-person or three-person teams or solo riders. Only "fat-bikes" with tire widths of 3.5" or greater will be allowed on the course.
The snowshoe races will begin at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, and the bike race will begin at 1:00 p.m. Race day check-in and registration for both races will open at 8:00 a.m., and close 30 minutes prior to the respective race.
Pre-registration is available through February 3 for $20. Race day registration will cost $25. There is a special snowshoe race rate of $10 for children 12 and under. There will also be snowshoe demos by Northern Lites Snowshoes and snowshoes will be available for those participants that do not have their own.
The event is a fundraiser for the Chippewa Off Road Bike Association. Proceeds will go toward development and maintenance of singletrack multi-use trails in the Chippewa Valley. The snowshoe races are sanctioned by the United States Snowshoe Association. The fat-bike race is part of the Wisconsin State Fat-Bike Race Series. Sponsors include Eau Claire Bike & Sport, Fantastic Sams Hair Salons, Milwaukee Burger Company and Scheels.
